Re: [daniel3679] Windows vista [In reply to] Can't Post

I was actually considering starting a thread about this last week.

Well, I did download the Beta version a while back when Microsoft was giving free downloads and CD's. From what I saw, it was just Windows XP with a few minor changes, and bloated all to heck. One of my friends sat down and his comment was "This is Windows XP SP3, right?". The thing is a bloody resource hog like you wouldn't believe.

I do understand that it's a beta version, so there are still plenty of bugs to be ironed out. Personally, I find XP is fine for me so I probably won't upgrade until I absolutely have to.

If you are planning on running it, I would make darn sure that you have well over a gig of RAM. 512 just doesn't cut it anymore.

Re: [daniel3679] Windows vista [In reply to] Can't Post

I have it installed on my my rig, but Vista is dead to me for now.

The only graphics driver I can get to work is the bundled crippled Nvidia driver. The one on Nvidia's web site installs fine. But when I reboot, I get an error saying the driver is invalid or something.

Can't get my 26" LCD HDTV to work with it at all. Then again, XP/Nvidia 9600GT doesn't like it much either... ended up with 1200x676 after compensating for overscan, instead of 1280x768 (as suggested in user manual) or 1366x768 (native res). Kind of makes me mad.

No driver yet for my sound card. And my integrated sound is disabled in the bios because Realtek audio blows...

Driver issues aside, I do really like the new UI.

Vista [In reply to] Can't Post

They really should have started from scratch with this one. It really does like like an XP theme with a bunch of features moved around.
I'm not digging the new Control Panel and hardware compatibility doesn't look too good atm. Then again , it's a beta , and it functions ( it can't wake up from sleep from what I've seen ..unless it's just me).
Although the UI is pretty , it comes with a plethora of new annoyances. "Windows needs your permission to continue" ...and this happens just about everytime you do anything "potentially" harmful ( which is practically anything). It's a great security feature ...but it's just not very practical for most users that know what to do and what not to do. It 'might' prevent hidden remote configuration changes, but then again, someone with knowledge and skill can probably remotely disable that security feature as well.
The new Start button is awkward at first , but I guess you get used to it.
The new search feature is welcome too.
All in all I really wanted to be impressed with this ...but so far it just isn't cutting it yet.

Blah .....at least the damn default search dog is gone.

Oh , and for those who aren't aware , if you want the 'glass' effect from Vista , there's a little stand-alone app that does just that:

http://www.chime.tv/products/glass2k.shtml.

Freeware. No installer. Pretty neat but decent graphics are recommended (for obvious reasons).

The pre-RC1 build is now available. I downloaded it yesterday and I'm going to give it try tommorow. Hopefully things have improved since the last beta.

Re: [fuzzylogic] Vista [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I figured I'd go ahead and update this thread...

Since the last post, Microsoft has released the RC1 for download and closed it. I did manage to get a copy and I could probably host it somewhere if anyone who already has a Beta2 Key would like a copy. Let me know.

It is a little less buggy. I ran it on my new rig for a whole two hours before I got fed up with it. None of my games would play on it. Everything was screwed all to heck. During the time that I had it going, it did run very well (keep in mind that this is my new kick-a$$ system) and I don't have any complaints. XP runs better though Tongue

I would strongly recommend against using any of the video drivers that are installed. I'm running a 7900GTO, and Vista decided that I wanted to use a Microsoft version of a crippled nVidia driver. What a joke.

IMO, Microsoft may be trying to try some new things, but the entire system has been redesigned for 'ease of use'. It's a fine concept, but when you turn around and realize that 90% of the users will have used Windows XP or 2000 before, things get confusing. I got annoyed much too quickly and gave up.

Just my $0.03 Wink
