ASUS Striker Extreme Motherboard Can't Post

Well guys, I have debated for weeks on end and I was leaning on building an AMD system this time and pretty much made up my mind to do so. I decided to investigate a little deeper about my options on building and Intel system again and ran across a few articles on the ASUS Striker Extreme motherboard and I was very impressed with the upgradeability of this system.

The info on this board is here:

http://www.hothardware.com/...icleid=919&cid=3

What I like about it (among the many things actually) is the range of processors that you can install to upgrade. It is even designed to run the future 1333Mhz front side bus CPU's. This really cought my appeal due to the QJ6700 and a few other overpriced processors that would be a nice upgrade when newer processors come out and lower thier prices making them and appealing upgrade in the near future.

The final blow that threw me over the edge was tigerdirects offer for the Intel PD 940 3.2G Processor w/4MB cache for 99.99 after rebate of 30.00. This is a very cheap and powerful alternative to other processors 2-3 times the price to get the system off of the ground and to upgrade later. This is the link:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/...ls.asp?EdpNo=1645065

The initial thought to go this route came originally after a benchmark that I was reviewing from my system compared to online results and the number one system was based from this motherboard and of course the QJ6700 CPU.

I ordered the CPU yesterday and it should arrive in 2-6 more business days. I have found the best price so far for the motherboard here:

http://www.lagoom.com/...tinfo-id-568909.html

Any ideas on which memory would be the best for overclockability?... The memory is one of the components that I intend to do right the 1st time. I'm planning on buying 4G all at once to ensure they are all matching components.

Let me know of any ideas on specific brand name components that would be best for top performance on this system. I have been a little out of the loop on the latest hardware releases but I am slowly catching up day by day.

Any input or ideas will be appreciated...

Thanks,
Hotrod

I see now that pricegrabber has it for the same price. You can find it thru this site...

I will probably get it there.

Hmm. I have also heard good things about that motherboard. Hopefully you will be able to score a Core2 Duo or Quad for cheap later on.

As for the RAM... I've had good overclocking results with Kingston and Crucial, but right now I'm running OCZ. I've heard many people say bad things about OCZ in terms of compatibility, but I haven't had any problems so far. I'm running 2gigs dual channel right not. If you have the cash, get DDR2-800 - I'm not sure how much of an overclock you will be able to do, but that RAM should be able to handle it.

What are you using for a PSU?

Thanks for the input azzey...

I dont know for sure about the PSU as of yet but I want to buy premium hardware that will support SLI and I think that will need to be 700watts or greater and some of the prices that I have seen are 150.00 or more for a good unit. Price is an object to some degree but I am willing to pay more for memory and the PSU due to the fact they are core items that the system needs to be stable to use like I plan to. The only things that I am holding back on price wise is the CPU and Video card.

I do plan to obtain a Core 2 Duo or Quad Core later when the price goes down (a lot!) lol. I also plan to upgrade the video card to 2 matching video cards for SLI setup towards the end of my upgrade project. Spending 400.00+ x2 will have to wait since a reasonably priced comparable setup will be a huge upgrade and will satisfy me for a period of time.

Do you have any info on the current PSU's that are top in the market right now?

I took this list (updated within the last 6 months) from another forum which am an active member:

Of course, those are just guidelines. If you can find something similar for a deal, that would be logical. Almost any SLI-certified PSU will be sufficient... make sure that you have enough power connectors, though.
Antec is one of the best names around (this week, at least)

Thats good info Azzey. Thanks for looking that up and posting. I received my CPU today in the mail. The construction of these dual core 900 series processors is kind of strange. They look like some of the older model AMD's with a low profile casing on top.

This is proof you cant judge the performance by the housing of the CPU, it just doesnt look as beefy as my Prescott but its supposed to smoke the pants off of it at least in multi-tasking.

We will see soon.

Thanks again Azzey,
