ASUS P4S533-MX CD Rom Issue Can't Post

My dads pc has a problem opening the CD Rom Drives. Theres currently 2 CD Rom Drives installed, 1 CD RW that is set as master and the other is a standard CD Rom Drive set to slave.

Once a disk is inserted and you select the drive to open it, the standard CD Rom Drive opens but it appears to be a blank disk. I know its not since its a game disk that I just purchased. The CD RW Drive acts as if theres no disk in the drive at all.

I have flashed the BIOS with the latest BIOS Update and still no fix. I have tested the power supply to make sure it was working. My tester only has lights and cant detect voltage.

Any ideas on what else to try?

Make sure that the IDE cables are securely in place. Also, do you know for sure that the drives work? Can you use them outside of Windows (DOS, Linux, etc)?

I made sure the IDE cables were in place securely and the BIOS detects them at boot up. I haven't tested any other way.

They both worked fine before this problem surfaced. How else can I test them?

...I could put them in another system. I may try that. I'm pretty certain its the board though. Its too coincedental that they both die at the same time.

Get this...

I believe its the CD Roms. I have a new game that I got for my dad and I tried to install and neither of the two BenQ drives will read the data. I tried on my girlfriends PC and it wont read them either.

I got the same game for both of them and I tried both of the game CDs and also my game CD that I know works because I installed it on my PC and have played it. All 3 CDs will not read on none of the 3 drives on either of the 2 pcs. I went to Benqs website and got the firmware upgrade and still no difference.

I guess there must be new data CDs out now that older drives cant read. I guess I will be forced to buy the DVD dual layer burners for both systems before I planned to.

The game is Toca Race Driver 3. Its an awesome game with great replay graphics. Also the driver coach talks to you during and between races. This is one of the best race games Ive seen so far.

I guess on a good note I dont have a problem with the ASUS motherboard.

Well, finally I got my dad a new DVD Dual Layer drive and I installed it tonight. It detected the data on the disk from the game I was trying to install with no problems at all. So, to sum it all up it was the drives.

Everything is A Ok now....

Thanks Azzey. I'm stopping back by his house this afternoon to add more cooling fans. I noticed that his hard drive and the general case temperature seemed a bit warmer than I would like to have it.

Hes probably going to benefit from my next upgrade that I am about to do anyway. I'm ordering parts a piece at a time now. Wink

I do that too. When you're short on cash (or not in a hurry) buy the parts of a period of about a month, and shop around for the best deals.
