AMD on the uprise Can't Post

I am hearing that the Barcelona chip was ran at an undisclosed meeting in a dual CPU setup similar to the socket F setup that was ran before but was still outperformed by Intel. This time no benchmarks were shared but there was some statements that was made about rendering some type of program in real time. The replies that was made by some of the blog members was that there was no conroe chip in any configuration that could possibly do that. So, it sounds that if AMD's new AM2 chip is performing some tasks above Intel's top chips then it looks like the crown will be handed back over to AMD mid to late this year.

I hope this happens to hopefully turn things back around for AMD. I heard speculation from one of the sales people at microcenter that IBM was looking at the possibility of buying out AMD. We don't want to see that.

If you are an AMD fan or if you would like to be then make your next rig AMD. I did. I've been Intel for the whole time but I knew that AMD had better chips to offer but I stuck it out with Intel. I'm the type of person that wants to keep the competition secure so we can reap the rewards of low cost chips and to remain the beneficiary of the CPU performance wars that have been going on since day one.

If the feedback is good from the first wave of Barcelona chips and the price is doable, I will pull out my X2 6000+ and upgrade. They say you should only have to upgrade your BIOS to use the Barcelona (Phenom) CPU. I'm sure that depends on what motherboard manufacturer you use and thier support to offer the BIOS upgrade in a timely manner. Otherwise you will have to get another motherboard that supports it.

Anyone else out there heard anything on this?...

I also have a nack for sticking with the underdog... and AMD has served me faithfully for many years. The only Intel machines in the house are my laptop (an older Centrino model), my P4 work rig, and my brother's computer, which is a PIII. Everything else is AMD all the way.

Unfortunately, with school and all, I have a hard time getting the money to keep up... I tend to run slightly older hardware, although not cheap stuff.

I usually get something in the ballpark at being up to date without being stupid in the price range that will get me by for a while. This current setup that I am using now is probably the most I have paid for any single component in any previous system. I made sure it would be expandable and powerful enough to make me happy for some time to come.

There's nothing wrong with having slightly older hardware for most of your systems in your home. I have a 754 socket motherboard by DFI Lanparty that I recently ordered a 39.99 AMD 64 3200+ single core processor for that works really nice and should do most things that I will use if for your a long time coming as a spare system. I'm pretty much done with getting new hardware with the exception of a new power supply for better cable management. I know that if I want to get the new Phenom AMD chip and another EVGA 8800GTX ANS3 video card for SLI I am set up to do it and it will probably be an overall 20% improvement when I need it but thats a ways down the road. My system is plenty powerful for anything I need for now.

You have a nice system too Azzey. I've seen your profile. Wink

Check the date on this last post. I am still using the same video card along with a second one and want for nothing. Money well spent in my opinion. How many video cards have you owned and nearly two years later still fit on the top video card charts and plan to keep using it for a time to come? This is the 1st card for me. My last card that was even close to that was an ATI 9600GT. I paid 179 for it and used it for over 3 years. Needless to say it wasnt in the top of the video card charts when I was done with it but nonetheless a great card. Wink
